Frequently Asked Questions
What data is needed to calculate corporate carbon emissions intensity?
To calculate your corporate carbon emissions intensity, which measures your emissions relative to revenue, we require the following information:
Country HQ: Your company’s headquarters location.
Primary Product Classification: The main industry or product category your company operates in.
Reporting Period: The fiscal year for your most recent financial data.
Revenue: The total revenue for the same fiscal year.
Emissions Data: Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions data for Scopes 1, 2, and upstream Scope 3 for the same fiscal year.
Where can I find my company’s spend data?
Spend data refers to the detailed information about how and where your company spends its money, otherwise known as procurement data.
Your finance team should be able to provide you with this data by downloading an export from your finance system.
To make requesting the data easier, you can use the below email template:
Hi [name],
We are supporting one of our key customers to understand the carbon impact of the products/services we deliver to them. There is business value in our participation.
To support them, I require an export of our spend (i.e. procurement) data. The data I need specifically is the spend amount for purchased goods and services.
Please exclude any sensitive or personal data. This relates to identifiable information, including names, addresses or card numbers – for example, please do not include payroll or employee benefit information.
*If you could get this back to me by XX/XX/XXXX that would be great.
If you have any questions feel free to reach out to Emitwise directly at support@emitwise.com*
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best wishes,
[Your name]
Should I include VAT in the spend figures I submit to Emitwise?
When submitting your spend file to Emitwise during the data collection process, VAT figures should not be included in your submission.
As it is a tax, VAT is excluded during the calculation of your company’s emissions. That is because taxes are not indicative of an emissions-inducing activity.
Should you still have any questions about what to include or exclude from your spend files, please reach out to the Emitwise team, who would be happy to support you.
How detailed or granular does the procurement data I provide need to be?
The spend (procurement) data you provide only needs to be as granular as the template specifies.
Providing more detailed procurement data will not guarantee that we can deliver more accurate emissions results at this time, as this depends on the contracted calculation methodology agreed upon between your organisation and Emitwise.
If you can provide more granularity, it will likely reduce the uncertainty of your calculations. And if you are to continue working with Emitwise in the future, greater detail will enable more accurate analyses and realistic carbon reduction initiatives.
As the quality of your procurement data increases (e.g. product or activity description, number of units purchased, supplier location, etc.), so does our ability to find the most appropriate emission factor and calculation approach.
You are asked to submit a copy of all purchased goods and services as a company, including payments of all operational goods (e.g. raw materials), capital assets (e.g. vehicles, machinery, IT) and services for the financial year requested.
The fields you need to complete on this template for each data point are:
Purchase date [the date you made this purchase]
Country of spend [The country where this supplier is located]
Supplier name [Name of the supplier who you made this purchase from]
Spend value [The total spend value of the purchase]
Currency [The 3-digit code for the currency you purchased this in, i.e. USD, EUR or GBP]
Spend category [The category to which this purchase is related too, commonly this will be stored within your finance system, e.g. “Office supplies’]
If you can submit it in the template provided, that is ideal; however, if you cannot, you can submit it in a format that is still tabular (i.e. not a doc, pdf or image file), and we’ll ask you to map the headers to your file so that we can translate it.
Can I submit the data without putting it into the template you provided?
Yes, you can.
However, in order for our system to take this data and be able to automatically calculate your emissions, we will need some additional information about the spreadsheet that you have uploaded.
We will ask you to map the columns in the spreadsheet you have uploaded, to our own data schema.
E.g.
What is the column heading in your file which contains the PURCHASE DATE?
What is the column heading in your file which contains the COUNTRY OF SPEND?
What is the column heading in your file which contains the SUPPLIER NAME?
What is the column heading in your file which contains the SPEND VALUE?
What is the column heading in your file which contains the CURRENCY?
What is the column heading in your file which contains the SPEND CATEGORY?
For each of the above, we will ask that you type in the header of the column that maps to the template we provided. We will then automatically clean and map the data for you.
How does Emitwise protect my data?
Will Emitwise Share My Data with Anyone Else?
No, Emitwise will protect and securely store your data. The only data that may be shared with your requesting customer(s) is your emissions results, targets and decarbonization initiatives, which are essential for tracking decarbonization efforts and fulfilling sustainability goals.
